Air Force help! What if i dont take the guaranteed electronics they gave me?
McCain 2008 asked:
I went to MEPS, oput down four jobs that i want and one aptitude area (only because they made me, so i picked electronics), and i just got the call that they gave me not one of my four jobs, but instead the electronic aptitude area. Can i say no to this and wait for one of my four to open up? When i asked the air force online chat thing they said i could be discharged and sent home if i do not take it?

If you arent enlisted and have not accepted or signed papers there is nothing for them to discharge you from. I dont know why they told you that you could be discharged.
Chances are that you did not get what you wanted because there was not a need in that particular area.
Keep in mind this….if you enlist and take the job which is offered to you, there is no reason why you cant cross rate at a later date into the field you are truly interested in.
You also have the option of joining another branch of military.
When they call you and give you what you have been chosen for, its like a job offer. You cant pick and choose. If a company doesnt need any more CEO’s then you arent going to get a CEO position, yanno?

yea, you will be DEP discharged if you don’t take the open E job. Basically meaning that you are no longer in DEP for the AF, no longer have any ties to the AF.
Never sign something you don’t agree with. You initialed your job sheet, which is basically saying that you agree to those terms.
Your options are: take the open job and see if you like it once you get to tech school. If not wash out and face getting discharged or re-classed into a different AFSC (rarely happens anymore). If you do like it, stick with it and put in for a cross-train at your 3 year mark.
or
deny the job and get DEP discharged.
You can always go back after a year or so but the likelihood of the same Recruiter working with u is pretty slim.
Try talking to a different branch, maybe Navy???

If you have already signed your paper work nothing you can do about it. You can talk to someone about a breach of contract. Which just means that they didnt hold up there end by givin you the job you wanted but the contract normally states that you will take any position that they put you into if your job options are available. Also they can give you one job and re class you which means you dont do what you want either way. Pretty much you get no options in the military so if you really want to join you better make sure you are willing to do anything at anytime. That could be first, second, or third shift and be ready to go to war. They only spend 6 months at a time there now but you never know when that will change. Good luck!

I would wait for one of your jobs to open up. If you go to basic training without a job locked in, they will make you security forces. This happened to a lot of people when I was in basic training about 2 years ago. good luck!

You have to understand,
The Air Force saves 60% of all jobs, to be assigned during Basic Training, for those enlisting under an open area.
IE: in your case, 60% of the electronics jobs, are saved to be assigned during basic training.
That leaves MEPS just 40% to assign, when those 40% are gone, they are gone.
So it sounds like MEPS, has already used all thier job slots, for the jobs you listed.
But there could be job slots, for those jobs offered in basic training.
………………………………………………………………………………………..
They CANNOT make you a Security Force, is you enlist under open electronics, thats a General area job.
………………………………………………………………………………………
Your options are.
1. Take the open electronics –
60% of the people who enlist in the AF, enlist under an open area contract.
2. Resign from DEP – but don’t expect to be allowed to try and enlist in the AF again, for atleast 6 months and you will require a wavier to do so.
3. Talk to your recruiter, and see if they will allow you to go on a DEP waiting list, for one of the jobs you want.
If they do, expect to wait atleast a year.
Since they jobs class slots, are already booked up, or you would have gotten one of your 3 choices.
You would have to wait, untill next year, when MEPS is again given more job slots, for the jobs you want.
