With a home theater Project, has anyone ever built a near ceiling stand instead of a ceiling mount?

I live in an apartment so I really can’t go through and wire my ceiling without the landlord going nuts. I have been thinking about builing a stand with a base that I could put my electronics in with a 4×4 attached going up to near ceiling height and then makeing the top adjustable.

Is this feasible? has anyone else done something similar?
From what I have read, a ceiling position is much better for usuability than a coffee table mount (people getting in the way)

If you look at how a projector projects an image you will still have to set the projector upside down for it to work. The projector should be level with the bottom of the screen (front projection) or level with the top (ceiling projection) to keep a square image. If you have the projector setting upright on a shelf above your head it causes keystone issues and image problems. Your shelf should work if you keep the projector well ventilated and upside down to do what you are looking for. The image below shows how the image projects from the projector.

I have a projector in my apartment and it is ceiling mounted. It only needs three holes large enough to accept some molly bolts to hold it up so when I move I can just patch those holes. As for the wiring, I’ve actually fished an HDMI cable up through the wall to just behind the projector. If you have a friend who is an electrician I would get his help with this part. Another option is to use a product called WireMold that would attach to the outside of the wall and can be painted to match your wall colors. The poster above me is absolutely correct about the mounting orientation of the projector. Re-read that again!
